AUVSI Introduces New Guidelines For UAV Operators

Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) recently published a set of guidelines to ensure UAV operators adhere to the safety, professionalism and respect in all uses of the technology. In an email interview with Defenseworld.net’s Bindiya Thomas, Michael Toscano, president & CEO, AUVSI talks about the need for such guidelines.

DW: What is the need for a code of conduct for UAS operators?

Michael Toscano, President & CEO, AUVSI: As with any new technology, a clear set of guidelines should be established as it grows to ensure operators are utilizing unmanned systems in a responsible and safe manner. The public should be confident in the benefits of this technology and its usefulness, from search and rescue operations to enhancing public safety. Our "Code of Conduct" serves as an accountability framework and provides direction for our members and operators on a range of issues that may be presented in real-life and test case scenarios.
