Lockheed Martin, in partnership with the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the University of Notre Dame, has demonstrated the airworthiness of a new beam control turret being developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and AFRL to give 360-degree coverage for high-energy laser weapons operating on military aircraft.
A research aircraft equipped with the Aero-adaptive Aero-optic Beam Control (ABC) turret conducted eight flights in Michigan. "These initial flight tests validate the performance of our ABC turret design, which is an enabler for integrating high energy lasers on military aircraft," said Doug Graham, vice president of advanced programs, Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, Lockheed Martin Space Systems. The ABC turret system is designed to allow high-energy lasers to engage enemy aircraft and missiles above, below and behind the aircraft. Lockheed Martin's flow control and optical compensation technologies counteract the effects of turbulence caused by the protrusion of a turret from an aircraft's fuselage. All turret components met U.S. Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration airworthiness requirements. Subsequent flight tests over the next year will demonstrate the turret in increasingly complex operations.
DARPAs Electronic-Photonic Heterogeneous Integration (E-PHI) program has successfully integrated billions of light-emitting dots on silicon to create an efficient silicon-based laser. The breakthrough, achieved by researchers working on the program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), will enable the production of inexpensive and robust microsystems that exceed the performance capabilities of current technologies
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) today said one of the key goals of the Ground X-Vehicle Technology (GXV-T) program is improving the survivability of ground-based armored fighting vehicles by increasing vehicle agility. Vehicle agility involves the ability to autonomously avoid incoming threats, either by rapidly moving out of the way or reconfiguring the vehicle so incoming threats have a low probability of hitting and penetrating—all without injuring the occupants in the process, it said
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is asking the space community to submit ideas to enable a flight demonstration in the next five years and an innovative public-private partnership to jumpstart a new industry. An increasing number of expensive, mission-critical satellites are launched every year into geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), approximately 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the Earth
DARPAs Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics (SyNAPSE) program has developed a new chip that mimics brains power-saving efficiency; uses 100x less power for complex processing than modern chips, DARPA said in a statement. The SyNAPSE chip is designed by researchers at IBM and is loaded with more than 5 billion transistors and boasts more than 250 million “synapses,” or programmable logic points, analogous to the connections between neurons in the brain
Sandia National Laboratories and Rockwell Collins are selected for Phase 3 of the DARPA Meso-dynamic Architectures program. The aim of the program is to research light-to-sound conversion in ultra-small optical waveguides and develop future system capabilities beyond those attainable with existing technology
Rockwell Collins bagged a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract to develop new electronically scanned array (ESA) antenna technology as part of the Arrays at Commercial Timescales (ACT) program. This program aims to make ESAs, a common building block component that is digitally interconnected, reconfigurable, and readily upgradeable
Sigma Labs today announced that it has received a contract from Honeywell Aerospace as part of a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Phase II award to develop Integrated Computational Material Engineering (ICME) framework. Phase I work was completed earlier in 2014
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has selected AeroVironment for the phase II preliminary design for the Tactically Exploited Reconnaissance Node (TERN) program. The 12-month, $19 million phase II effort seeks to conclude with subscale flight demonstrations prior to a planned phase III award decision, AeroVironment said in a press release Wednesday
Aurora Flight Sciences announced that it has won a contract to develop Defense Advanced Research Projects Agencys (DARPA) SideArm launch and recovery system Tuesday. Demonstration of the SideArm technology was a key part of Aurora's work on the Tactically Enhanced Reconnaissance Node (Tern) program
Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract by the US Marine Corps (USMC) to modernise and maintain its virtualised theatre battle management core system (TBMCS). The TBMCS synchronises air mission planning for all arms of the military when integrated with joint services and coalition systems
Lockheed Martin successfully tested a new solution for integrated live, virtual and constructive (LVC) training during a flight demonstration at the company's Aeronautics facility in Fort Worth, Texas.During the flight test, a pilot flying in a live F-16 engaged in a synthetic training exercise with a pilot flying as wingman in a ground-based F-16 simulator
