Sikorsky has won $8 million contract for Phase 1 of the Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The DARPA's ALIAS program’s aim is to develop and insert new automation into existing aircraft to enable operation with reduced onboard crew, according to the press release announced on Friday.
The program seeks to leverage the considerable advances that have been made in aircraft automation systems, including progress made in remotely piloted aircraft, to help reduce pilot workload, augment mission performance, and improve aircraft safety.
Sikorsky's approach to ALIAS is based on its Matrix Technology introduced in 2013 to develop, test and field systems and software that improve significantly the capability, reliability and safety of flight for autonomous, optionally piloted, and piloted vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.
Matrix aims to give rotary and fixed-wing aircraft the high level of system intelligence needed to complete complex missions with minimal human oversight.
"We are tremendously excited about the potential transition opportunities ALIAS could bring," said Mark Miller, Vice President of Research & Engineering.
"The potential ability to rapidly reconfigure Black Hawk helicopters to enable them to be flown by fewer crew or crew of different skill levels is very exciting. It will be very interesting to apply this technology, and we believe it could be a real game changer for both military and commercial customers."
In launching its original autonomy program in 2013, Sikorsky outfitted an S-76 commercial helicopter with fly-by-wire controls and the Matrix Technology suite, creating the Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA) as its flying test lab.
SARA is enabling rapid flight testing of software and hardware, including multi-spectral sensors that have been previously integrated in the systems integration labs at Sikorsky's headquarters.
Last year, in collaboration with the U.S. Army, Sikorsky completed the Manned Unmanned Resupply Aerial Lifter (MURAL) program, in which a Black Hawk helicopter was modified for autonomous and remotely supervised control.
Pentagon announced Friday that Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky joint venture, Marine Helicopter support has won a $2 billion contract for servicing the US Navy's H-60 helicopters. The contract covers performance-based logistics on 1,710 assemblies and components, and also includes the repair, modification, overhaul and replacement of hardware for the Navy's fleet of H-60 helicopters, Reuters quoted Pentagon announcement
Sikorsky Aircraft Corp has begun the ground testing for the S-97 RAIDER program. The RAIDER is an armed reconnaissance rotorcraft designed to outmatch conventional military helicopters in maneuverability, payload, speed, range and high/hot environmental conditions
Airbus Helicopters, PZL Swidnik – the Polish subsidiary of AgustaWestland and Sikorsky will compete in a contest to supply 70 multirole helicopters to Polands armed forces. The ministry on 30 December confirmed that all the same three had submitted bids to the nations defence ministry
The US Navy and Army will proceed with the existing plan to purchase 102 Sikorsky helicopters for $1.3 billion in the coming year, US DoD announced Monday
The Indian Ministry of Defense will now accept commercial bids from Sikorsky later this month for the procurement of 16 multirole helicopters for the Navy. Contender NHIndustries has reportedly been ejected because of its connection to Finmeccanica which is currently under a partial ban in India
Sikorsky has won the contract for Phase 3 of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program. DARPA's ALIAS program is leveraging advances in autonomy to reduce pilot workload, augment mission performance, and improve aircraft safety and reliability
Sikorsky Aircraft announced Friday that it has delivered six CH-148 Cyclone helicopters to the Canadian government during an acceptance celebration. The six helicopters represent the first of 28 Cyclone aircraft that Sikorsky will deliver to the Canadian Armed Forces to perform a full range of anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and utility missions in various environments
Sikorsky Aircraft has won a $38.8 million contract from the US department of Defense for procuring critical parts and associated support for two CH-53K system demonstration test article aircraft
Sikorsky Aircraft announced Friday that it has completed the first flight of S-97 RAIDER helicopter, designed to demonstrate a game-changing combination of maneuverability, hover ability, range, speed, endurance and survivability. Based on the X2 coaxial rotor design, the RAIDER helicopter is capable of being developed into a multi-mission configuration that is able to carry six troops and external weapons
DARPA announced Monday that its Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program developed self-steering bullet has demonstrated repeatable performance against moving targets. EXACTO developed a self-steering bullet to increase hit rates for difficult, long-distance shots, completed in February its most successful round of live-fire tests to date
DARPA on Monday issued a statement seeking proposals for N-ZERO, new Near Zero Power RF and Sensor Operations (N-ZERO) program to develop wireless, event-driven sensing capabilities to overcome the power limitations of persistent sensing. Near-zero-power technologies would allow physical, electromagnetic and other sensors to remain dormant until an interesting event awakens them
