Belarus Signs Preliminary Agreement To Acquire Su-30 Jets

Belarus has signed a preliminary agreement with Irkut Corporation to acquire Sukhoi Su-30 multirole fighters for its Air Force, country’s deputy defense minister said Thursday.

The acquired Su-30 fighter jets will replace outdated Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters, Sputnik reported citing a local newspaper.

"[The Air Force's] capability to destroy air targets after the acquisition of the Su-30s will increase, while extensive tactical range of the [Su-30] jets will enable the Air Force to perform combat missions from any airport in the country," Belarusian Deputy Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Igor Lotenkov was quoted by the SB – Belarus Segodnya newspaper.

The Su-30 fighter is a two-seat derivative of the earlier Su-27 Flanker with an extended operating range, capable of air-to-air and air-to-ground strikes and equipped with a wide variety of precision-guided munitions.
