Embraer Defence and Security has achieved a significant milestone in the KC-390 Tactical Military Tanker and Transport Aircraft program by demonstrating the Cobham aerial refuelling systems installed in KC-390's prototype 001.
Configured as a tanker for the first time, a KC-390 test aircraft fitted with Cobham 912E wing mounted pods completed a series of successful flight trials during May 2016. Operating from Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto facility in Brazil, the flight involved hose stability and trail and rewind tests with both High Speed and Low Speed Drogues fitted.
The 912E pod is a bespoke design solution utilising the latest technology for the KC-390 to meet the aircrafts high performance criteria including its ability to satisfy a wide number of receivers at extended ranges. The Brazilian Air Force is the launch customer for the aircraft which is scheduled to enter service in 2018.
Embraer and Boeing have signed an agreement to jointly market and support the KC-390, a multi-mission mobility and aerial refuelling aircraft. The aircraft is currently on an eight nation tour, and expects to receive certification by the end of 2017
Embraers certification for the KC-390 tanker-transport has delayed to the second half of 2017. Further, Embraer is planning to deliver the first KC-390 cargo jets in the first half of 2018, extending a deadline originally set for the end of 2016
Embraer will deliver two KC-390 medium-lift transport aircraft to the Brazilian Air Force in 2018. As two prototypes advance through the flight testing campaign, the first production aircraft is already being assembled at the Embraer facility in Gavião Peixoto, Sao Paolo state, the air force said in a press release Monday
Embraers KC-390 Basic Vehicle has recently been certified by the IFI (Industrial Fostering and Coordination Institute), the Brazilian Air Force organization responsible for military certification. The Provisional Type Certificate attests that the KC-390 in this basic configuration complies with the certification basis requirements
Cobham has been awarded a contract by the Bell-Boeing Joint Project Office to develop a palletized aerial refuelling system to give the the US Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft the ability refuel other aircraft while inflight. Known as V-22 Aerial Refueling System (VARS), the system will utilize Cobham's existing FR300 Hose Drum Unit with some modifications
Cobham has received orders worth tens of millions of dollars for radio frequency microelectronics for F-35 fighter jet program. "Our portfolio of microelectronic components and assemblies enable electronic warfare and radar system sensitivity, helping pilots achieve mission success by maintaining situational awareness and staying safe," said Jill Kale, president of Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions Tuesday
The Indian Defense Ministry has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe in $208 million Embraer aircraft deal after allegations of payment of kickbacks to secure the airborne early warning and control systems (AEW&C) contract.
