General Dynamics To Christen US Navy's Colorado Submarine
A Virginia-class submarine

General Dynamics Electric Boat will christen US Navy's latest advanced nuclear attack submarine Colorado during a ceremony at its shipyard on Saturday.

Colorado submarine is the 15th ship of the Virginia Class and features some technology from Ohio-class platforms.

Virginia-class attack submarines are designed to track down and destroy enemy undersea platforms apart from projecting power ashore, the company announced in a statement today.

They are typically armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, and can also support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, the company announced today.

Annie Mabus, daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, is the ship's sponsor. Secretary Mabus will be the event's principal speaker.

Electric Boat and its partner Newport News Shipbuilding share construction of the submarines under a teaming agreement.  A total of 28 Virginia-class submarines have been delivered, are under construction.
