The United Arab Emirates has closed the deal to acquire two French-made Gowind-class corvettes during France's Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly, visit to Abu Dhabi this week.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deal Thursday, stating “this decision further strengthens the strategic and military partnership between France and the United Arab Emirates, and represents a new export success for France”.
In addition to the two new ships for UAE, Naval Group already has contracts for the construction of ten Gowind corvettes for two navies.
Multiple defence companies had lined up to sell their versions of the surveillance vessel to the UAE, including Italy's Fincantieri, ahead of Thursday's announcement.
Egypt has meanwhile received the first of four Gowind corvettes it ordered from Naval Group, the company's first sale of the monohull.
DCNS has completed sea trials of the first Gowind 2500 corvette designed and built at the company's site in France for the Egyptian navy. The new corvette is being marketed at the naval defence market, and ten Gowind 2500 vessels are on order with international navies
France is initiating negotiations with Egypt on buying two more Gowind Corvettes. French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian visited Cairo last weekend
DCNS has started to construct GOWIND 2500 corvette, which is the first of a series of four units that will be delivered to Egypt before 2019. The delivery of the first vessel is slated for 2017 that is less than four years after the signature of the contract last summer, the company announced on Wednesday
DCNS has won a €1 billion contract from Egypt for the acquisition of four Gowind corvettes, according to La Tribune. This contract is yet to be confirmed
