China's first locally built carrier, the Type 001A, is undergoing preparations for its first sea trial, with the scaffolds on the carrier completely removed and a phased array radar installed.
"All the equipment and devices on the carrier are in the joint debugging stage, and the main engine has been powered. In 2018, we will present a surprise to the Chinese people," DSIC Chairman Liu Zheng said, according to a report on cctv.com.
Liu, who is also the general director of construction of the Type 001A and a member of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the comments to cctv.com when he was attending the Two Sessions, Global Times reported.
"This all proves that the Type 001A is getting ready for its first sea trial, and the exact timing will depend on factors like the weather and sea conditions. April 23 is Navy Day, the founding day of the PLA Navy [April 23 1949], so this might also be taken into consideration," Li Jie, a Beijing-based naval expert, told the Global Times on Tuesday.
"After the sea trial, which normally takes about 6-12 months, it will be ready for delivery to the PLA Navy, so it's very likely we will see the carrier enlisted by the end of 2018," said Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator.
The Type 001A was launched in Dalian on April 26 2017. The speed with which the Type 001A was built was the ‘fastest in the history of aircraft carrier construction,’ as it only took two years from the laying of the foundation in the shipyard to its launch, and more importantly, everything from the ship's body to its devices is domestically built, Liu said.
"The quality of our construction is also world-class. For example, the world-class standard for the flatness of the flight deck is not more than 4 percent, and we made it lower than 3 percent," Liu noted.
Chinas first aircraft carrier Liaoning will take part in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navys first combat drill to be held in the disputed South China Sea region, local media reports. This is a routine and planned arrangement to test and improve the military's training level and comprehensively enhance its ability to combat and to win

CSIC manufactures ships and submarines and has made China's first conventionally-powered aircraft carrier which is currently undergoing mooring tests
Chinese military experts on Monday claimed that Chinas first home-made carrier is equipped with better construction technology and weaponry than Indias first domestically made aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which is being assembled using foreign technologies. "In terms of technology, India's home-made aircraft carrier cannot compare with China's as China has taken a leap in construction technology and other relevant core technologies, including construction materials, the deck for fighter jets to ski jump and the radar system," Song Zhongping, a TV commentator and military expert, told the Global Times on Monday
The fighter jets will use an electromagnetic catapult on Chinas third aircraft carrier. The catapult technology developed by a team led by Ma Weiming, is likely to be employed on Chinas third aircraft carrier - and second domestically made carrier - to revitalize the army through science and technology, a Beijing based expert was quoted as saying by Global Times Thursday
Chinas first home-made Type 001A aircraft carrier, slated for sea tests soon, will not house fifth-gen fighter jets but will instead operation with some 40 J-15 fighter aircraft. The Type 001A carrier, which is close to completing its mooring test, has a ski-jump flight deck while the fifth generation jets such as J-20 and J-31 are meant for flight operations from China's future straight-deck aircraft carriers with the electromagnetic launcher system
China has launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier designed and built in the northeast port of Dalian. The new carrier, the first domestically-built one, was transferred from dry dock into the water at a launch ceremony that started at about 9 a
Chinas second aircraft carrier ‘Type 001A will conduct its first sea trials in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea areas, this week. "The first sea trials of China's second aircraft carrier, built at the Dalian shipyard, are likely to take place in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea to test its power and design," Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times Sunday
Chinese home-grown multi-role fighter jet J-10C has been put into active combat duty on Monday. The stealth fighter is equipped with advanced avionics system and other airborne weapons and has airstrike capabilities within medium and close range and is capable of precision striking land and maritime targets, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force was quoted as saying in a statement by Xinhua Monday
