Armenia’s military is expected to deploy Russian-built Tor air defense missile systems soon, as the delivery is likely to be within ‘several months’, Panorama.am reports citing the report by the Public Television of Armenia.
Arthur Poghosyan, the deputy chief of the Air Defense Forces, talked about the missile system’s combat capacities at the “Zinuzh” (Armed Forces) program aired by the TV company on 19 May 2018, citing its sources at the Defense Ministry.
“Tor is super modern missile system that can engage in a battle against air attacks in automatic mode, even without the participation of the [military] staff,” Poghosyan said during the program.
Tor Russian-made system is an all-weather low to medium altitude, short-range surface-to-air missile system designed for engaging airplanes, helicopters, cruise missiles, precision guided munitions, unmanned aerial vehicles and short-range ballistic threats.
The Armenian army acquired Russian-made Iskander missile systems in 2016, with Armenia’s third president Serzh Sargsyan noting the country had to buy them to balance the military situation in the Caucasus region.
