France has awarded a hypersonic glider demonstrator project to ArianeGroup, which will be conducted under overall project management by the French defence procurement agency, DGA, as announced by Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly on 21st January.
The programme is designated V-max (véhicule manoeuvrant expérimental or experimental manoeuvring vehicle).
"We have decided to award a contract for a hypersonic glider demonstrator," able to reach a speed of over Mach 5 (over 6,000 km/h),” Parly said during her New Year’s address to the armed forces.
Hypersonic gliders — unpowered, manoeuvring vehicles flying at speeds greater than Mach 5 (6,000km/h) — have been under study by the major nuclear powers for several years. To reach hypersonic speed, the glider is boosted by a missile or rocket; most current projects rely on ballistic missiles.
The French programme will be designed to evaluate the potential advantages and limitations of the concept and to study the technologies necessary to develop such a system. The DGA says it will explore the technological trade-offs necessary to achieve hypersonic speed.
The primary challenge will be to remain manoeuvrable at hypersonic speed and to withstand extremely high temperatures. The programme will aim to explore suitable materials of construction and the mass of the warhead that could be carried by a hypersonic glider depending on its size.

MBDA will present SmartGlider, a new family of air launched guided weapons, at Dubai Airshow starting tomorrow, for the first time outside Europe. “We are seeing a huge interest in the SmartGlider family from the region”, states Florent Duleux, MBDA Vice-President Middle East
The Airbus Perlan Mission II glider has attained its highest ever altitude, rising to 32,500 feet during test flights in southern Argentina. Now in its second season of testing near the Patagonian city of El Calafate, the Perlan 2 team is focusing to eclipse the current world gliding altitude record of 50,727 feet, which milestone was set in 2006 by Einar Enevoldsen and the late Steve Fossett, flying the Perlan 1 glider
China is deploying a network of underwater gliders to help it track the movement and activities of foreign submarines in the disputed South China Sea. While China says it has sovereignty over the whole South China Sea, the US and some of its allies have been conducting ship, air and submarine patrols in the area claiming freedom of navigation
The UK Navy is operating a robot fleet of seven submarine gliders and three surface wave gliders to collect environmental data in real time as part of its demonstrator missions run by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC). “This deployment will showcase the capabilities of marine robots to the Royal Navy, and other defence and industry partners,” NOCs Professor Russell Wynn, chief scientist of the mission was quoted as saying by
Russia must develop defense systems against hypersonic weapons before the “worlds leading countries” successfully develop the weapons, President of Russia, Vladimir Putin said Monday. "So far only Russia has hypersonic weapons
