Turkey is expected to receive S-400 Triumf missile defense systems by this year end, TASS reports quoting an official as saying.
"We plan to fulfill our commitments on delivering equipment and training specialists by the end of this year," the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation said on Wednesday.
The contract is being fulfilled in accordance with the timeframe coordinated by the sides, the service added. "As Turkish officials repeatedly stated, the equipment can be delivered as early as next month," the service noted.
General director of Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev confirmed to RIA Novosti that the delivery will begin next month.
The plans of Turkey, a NATO member, have irked Washington, which threatened with sanctions against Ankara if it goes ahead with the purchase.
Washington is reportedly halting the training of Turkish pilots of U.S. F-35 fighter jets in addition to threatening economic and other military sanctions as Ankara insists on its S-400 deal with Russia.
Washingtons behaviour in regarding the S-400 deal is an attack on the strategic autonomy of New Delhi and Ankara, and US attempts to foist its interests on sovereign countries would prove counterproductive, experts from India and Pakistan said Monday. “My view is that Turkey and India will very jealously protect autonomy in their strategic decision making
The S-400 air defense system could give Turkey control over the airspace of a part of the Mediterranean and Syria, which is a territory where the United States and Israel routinely conduct aerial operations. The reason why the US is vehemently opposed to Turkey acquiring the S-400 is because Washington and Israel may have to keep Ankara informed before launching an air-raid
The Pentagon has suspended training of new F-35 Turkish pilots, and told Ankara the current students must leave the country by July 31, as new details about the rift with Ankara over its plans to purchase Russia's S-400 missile system come to the fore. Acting US Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan in a letter to Hulusi Akar, Turkeys defense minister dated June 6, wrote that the 42 Turkish students attending F-35 training at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida will be required to depart by that date
Turkey is likely to deploy the first of the two Russian-made S-400 batteries in Ankara while another of those batteries will be installed at a “strategically important location” in the eastern and south-eastern region of Turkey, sources have revealed. “Places where S-400 will be deployed have been determined,” Ömer Çelik, ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) spokesperson Ömer Çelik was quoted as saying by Daily Sabah last week
