Russia’s AK-12 ‘Baby Kalashnikov’ Rifle Finds Export Market

Russia began exporting its latest AK-12 assault rifle, dubbed ‘baby Kalashniov’ to neighboring countries, according to Dmitry Tarasov, General Director of the Kalashnikov Concern.

Tarasov did not name the states to which weapons are exported in comments made to the Russian media. He further said that the concern has already fulfilled its obligations for the supply of AK-12s to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for this year and has begun to fulfill orders for 2021.

AK-12 is a 5.45 mm caliber submachine gun manufactured by the Kalashnikov concern. At the end of 2018, the weapon was adopted by the Ground Forces, marines and airborne units. At the same time, the first batch of machine guns entered the troops.

The mass of the assault rifle is 3.5 kilograms, the range of a direct shot is 440 meters. You can fire in three modes: burst, two-shot cutoff and single. For the first time, Picatinny rails are installed on the machine. The rate of fire of the weapon is 650 rounds per minute.

A new magazine has been developed for the assault rifle, which can be used as an emphasis for shooting. Identification windows also appeared. The AK-12 has improved ergonomics compared to the previous models - AK-74M and AKM. In addition, the assault rifle is part of the Ratnik outfit.

In addition to the standard A-12, Kalashnikov’s has developed a version of the rifle chambered for NATO 5.56mm Rounds which is to be Unveiled at Army-2020 Forum to be held next week in Moscow.
