Ukraine Receives Modernized MiG-29 Jet

he Ukrainian Air Force took delivery of a modernized MiG-29 jet from Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant this week.

The MiG-29MU1 fighter was handed over to aviators of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Center Air Command, Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said.

Ukraine has reportedly sought radars, on-board computers and other equipment from Israel’s Elbit Systems for its MiG jets. The project with Elbit is considered to be superior to the upgrades of the MiG-29MU2 which involves improving the engine, avionics, satellite navigation system and the radar.

The MiG-29MU1 fighter includes a satellite navigation system, a more powerful N019-19 radar, electronic defense system, an updatable threat database, as well as an electronic countermeasures system. It will have enhanced capability to strike ground targets.

State-run Ukroboronprom claims that the MiG-29MU1 can reach speeds of up to 2,500 km/h, which is provided by two turbojet engines with an afterburner. The fighter’s armament list, in addition to the 30-mm automatic cannon, includes a whole range of air-to-air missiles for air combat at short and medium distances, as well as bombs and unguided rockets for engaging ground targets. In addition, the aircraft is equipped with an advanced electronic warfare system, which is designed for individual protection of the aircraft from attacks by enemy anti-aircraft missile systems and aircraft.
