South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said $3.9 billion (4.3 trillion won) will be spent on research and development in the defense sector to secure cutting-edge technologies.

The investment for 2021 covers $573.3 million (631.8 billion won) to develop core weapon technologies; besides evolving indigenous weapons parts, establishing consortiums of companies, universities and research centers to carry out various projects.

The figure is up by 10% (3.9 trillion won or $3.5 billion) from what DAPA allotted for R&D projects last year.

Seoul is currently working on KF-X fighter jet, a long-range air defense radar, an Iron Dome-like air defense system and a light aircraft carrier among others.
