Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said today that over 1050 rockets besides drones and missiles were fired across central and Southern Israel in the last 38 hours.
Israel carried out hundreds of air strikes in Gaza into Wednesday morning. Tensions between Israel and Hamas soared this week as Palestinian militants began firing rockets at Israel on Monday, May 10.
"The Al-Qassam Brigades has launched the largest missile strike on Tel Aviv and its environs, with 130 missiles, in response to the enemy's targeting of civilian high-rises," Hamas said in a statement Tuesday evening, as per Israeli media.
“Wednesday morning in Israel: In two days, over 1,000 rockets fired by Palestinian terror groups from Gaza at Israeli population centers; five people were killed by rocket fire in Lod, Ashkelon, Rishon-LeZion; and over 200 Israelis were injured,” Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“Our fighter jets, with the Israel Securities Authority (ISA), neutralized key figures of Hamas' intelligence: Hassan Kaogi, head of the Hamas military intelligence security department & his deputy Wail Issa, head of the military intelligence counterespionage department. Looks like our intel was better,” the Israeli military said in a Twitter post today.
The IDF posted a video of its Iron Dome air defense system filling the sky with interceptors as dozens of rockets rained down on capital Tel Aviv and central Israel Tuesday evening. The military said it attacked “Hamas weapons stores hidden inside civilian buildings in Gaza.”
The Iron Dome is developed by Rafael, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Raytheon, with the latter providing parts for interceptors used in the system. The radar systems are from IAI’s ELTA Systems company. The defense system works by tracking incoming short-range projectiles by radar, then analyses data about the likely impact zone - before assessing whether to provide co-ordinates to a missile firing unit to intercept. It targets incoming rockets and fires an interceptor missile to destroy them in the air. Each battery has a firing-control radar to identify targets. The defense system also has a portable missile launcher and is easily transportable, with just a few hours needed to relocate and set up.
