Over 100 persons including US soldiers are reported killed or injured in a blast at Kabul airport’s Abbey Gate entrance and another at the Baron Hotel, a short distance away.

A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that 52 people have been injured in a blast at Kabul airport, the TOLO news TV Channel reported on Thursday.

He denied that members of his organization were behind the blast. "The explosion was triggered by a suicide bomber, as a result of which several Taliban fighters guarding the airport were injured," the Taliban spokesperson said.

Earlier, UK armed forces minister, James Heappey said there is a terror threat to Kabul Airport.

Heappey spoke on several UK media outlets to warn of a "credible and imminent" threat from Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K), the Afghanistan branch of the Islamic State, on Kabul Airport. It follows advice from the US State Department, advising its citizens to leave the area immediately.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the blast killed civilians and US military servicemen. "We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate (one of the main entrances to the airport) was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US and civilian casualties," Kirby said on Twitter.

"We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate."

Other reports said that the blast occurred on Thursday afternoon, followed by a shootout. A suicide bomber blew up an explosive at the northern entrance to the airport. Foreign military personnel may be among those killed in the blast. The reports also mentioned a second blast, which could have been set off by an explosive-laden car, the Sky News TV Chanel reported, citing the UK Defense Ministry.
