Israel has ordered six Bell Boeing V-22 tiltrotor worth more than $1 billion, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 13 January.
The government of Israel's request includes six aircraft in a "V-22B Block C" configuration, with these to be optimised for search and rescue and special operations duties, the DSCA says. Also counting related aircraft equipment, support services and personnel training, "the estimated cost is $1.13 billion", it adds.
"The proposed sale of V-22B aircraft will enhance and increase the Israel Defense Forces' search and rescue and special operations capabilities. The V-22B provides the capability to move personnel and equipment to areas not accessible to fixed-wing lift assets," the DSCA was quoted as saying by Flight Global.
Israel began evaluating the V-22 in 2011, with some of its air force personnel having flown the aircraft from US Marine Corps facilities as part of the process. A final report produced following this work recommended that the service acquire "a number" of the aircraft to meet special operations requirements.
The US Navy has awarded a $1.3 billion worth contract to Bell-Boeing for the procurement of 22 V-22 Ospreys, which authorizes purchase of 100 V-22s over the next five years
The Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey took center stage at the Dubai Air Show this week with company executives saying that aircraft sales could grow significantly in the "very near future". However, despite its vast success in Afghanistan, the aircraft may be procured in a VIP configuration in the Middle East and possibly elsewhere
The US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced yesterday that Israel is planning to buy six V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. “Israel will get six V-22s out of the next order to go on the assembly line, and they will be compatible with other [Israeli defense force] capabilities,” he said
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey aircraft has successfully completed an initial test performing as an aerial refueling tanker. Adding this capability to the tiltrotor aircraft would further advance its versatility in combat, humanitarian and ship-based operations, the company said in a statement
The Italian Navy has been introduced to the MV-22 Osprey through the members of Special Purpose-Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response, or SP-MAGTF Crisis Response, at a recent visit to Taranto-Grottaglie Air Base, Italy. Bell-Boeing is being awarded $57 million modification to a previously awarded contract for non-recurring engineering and the retrofit of one MV-22 aircraft in support of the V-22 Common Configuration-Readiness and Modernization (CC-RAM) Program. CC-RAM is an aircraft readiness improvement initiative to modify MV-22 aircraft to a Block C common configuration, US Department of Defense said in a statement Thursday
Flight tests have validated a new engine upgrade for Rolls-Royce AE 1107C engines powering V-22 aircraft, maximizing "hot and high" capability up to 6,000 feet of altitude and 95°F. The enhanced capability is part of a series of upgrades that will boost engine power 17 percent for the aircraft, as Rolls-Royce continues to add innovations to the proven AE 1107C engine
