Sikorsky has won the contract for Phase 3 of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program.
DARPA's ALIAS program is leveraging advances in autonomy to reduce pilot workload, augment mission performance, and improve aircraft safety and reliability. DARPA is working with Sikorsky to improve and expand the capabilities developed through a tailorable autonomy kit for installation in both fixed wing airplanes and helicopters, the company said in a statement Wednesday.
After completion of the first two phases of the program, Sikorsky has integrated its Matrix Technology into Sikorsky's Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA) and also on a Cessna Caravan. DARPA ALIAS utilizes Matrix, a capability toolkit that includes hardware and software as well as multi-spectral sensors that enable scalable automation.
"Our autonomy capabilities will help pilots in high workload and degraded visual environments ultimately increasing safety and efficiency," explained Mark Miller, vice president, Sikorsky Engineering and Technology. "Pilots can choose to engage autonomy to help operate, dynamically plan, adjust and/or execute a complete spectrum of responsibilities allowing the operators to better focus on the designated mission at hand."
Through the DARPA ALIAS program, Sikorsky is developing systems intelligence that will give operators the confidence to fly aircraft safely, reliably and affordably in optimally piloted modes enabling flight with two, one or zero crew. The program will improve operator decision aiding for manned operations while also enabling unmanned operations.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced Tuesday a program that aims sharing battlefield information at multiple levels of security classification through a single handheld device. Dubbed ‘Secure Handhelds on Assured Resilient networks at the tactical Edge (SHARE), this program uses a resilient secure network that links devices without needing to route traffic through secure data centers, the official release dated January 10 said
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has completed first phase of program developing temporary underwater fiber-optics communications networks to ensure connectivity when tactical networks are unavailable. DARPAs Tactical Undersea Network Architecture (TUNA) program recently completed its initial phase, developing concepts and technologies aimed at restoring connectivity for US forces when traditional tactical networks are knocked offline or otherwise unavailable, the agency announced Thursday

Despite Orbital ATKs lawsuit, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has gone ahead with its Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS) program by selecting Space Systems Loral (SSL) as its commercial partner for the program. DARPA and SSL seek to develop technologies that would enable cooperative inspection and servicing of satellites in geosynchronous orbit (GEO), more than 20,000 miles above the Earth, and demonstrate those technologies on orbit, DARPA said in a press statement Thursday
