Leonardo has won a £40 million contract to improve the defence of the Typhoon aircraft by upgrading its Defensive Aids Sub System (DASS).
The two-year contract, which includes capability work by Leonardo, integration activities by BAE Systems and Ministry of Defence trials, will see the Typhoon’s 'Praetorian' DASS upgraded in order to meet the UK Air Force’s future operational requirements, the company announced Friday.
Praetorian is a suite of protective electronic systems installed inside the Typhoon, which includes sensors and countermeasures, that seamlessly work together to defend the jets from a variety of threats.
Leonardo leads the EuroDASS consortium (which also includes HENSOLDT, Elettronica and Indra) to provide the Praetorian system, which is a baseline system on the more than 500 Eurofighter Typhoons delivered to date.
A majority of the UK’s new capability enhancement contract will be carried out by Leonardo at its electronic warfare centre in Luton, UK, while integration work and airworthiness clearances will be carried out by the UK’s Typhoon prime contractor BAE Systems in Warton, UK.
Leonardo provides more than 60 percent of the avionics for the Typhoon, including leading the consortia responsible for providing the aircraft’s radar and infrared search and track (IRST) system.
The company is responsible for around 36% of the Typhoon’s overall programme value, which includes parts of the aircraft’s structure, avionics and on-board electronics. In a further technology development, Leonardo is currently leading the EuroRADAR consortium in the development of the Captor-E (E-Scan) radar for Typhoon.
The new AESA radar will further enhance the capability of the aircraft by providing a 60 percent wider field of regard. Kuwait will be the first Typhoon operator to receive the new radar, in line with initial deliveries to the nation.
Leonardo has won 40 million pounds ($52 million) to upgrade anti-missile defense systems of UKs Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. "Today's announcement is a clear example of how it (the Typhoon) is being continually enhanced and upgraded so it remains as effective tomorrow as it is today," Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said on Thursday
BAE Systems and Leonardo are collaborating on new precision-guided solutions that will offer US and allied military forces a range of low-risk, cost effective, advanced munitions for advanced, large caliber weapon systems. The two companies anticipate offering new adaptations of Leonardos Vulcano — a family of gun-launched munitions that exceed the performance of currently available precision-guided projectiles — in a variety of gun systems, including the BAE Systems-built Advanced Gun System (AGS) and the Mk 45 naval gun
Leonardo has signed a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) worth in excess of 290 million Euros to fit jet fighters, helicopters, warships and missile systems with advanced identification systems. The contract will see Leonardo and HENSOLDT, working together as ‘Team Skytale, upgrade the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) technology on more than 350 of the UKs operational aircraft, naval vessels and ground-based air defence systems to the latest ‘Mode-5 standard, the company announced Thursday
The French and Italian major Air Navigation Service providers respectively DSNA (Direction de Services de la Navigation Aérienne) and ENAV (Italian air navigation service provider), alongside industrial partners Leonardo and Thales, confirm their commitment to Coflight, the new generation Flight Data Processing System. The parties decided to reinforce their cooperation to promote Coflight on the European scene by the establishment of a long-term support and maintenance services contract
Leonardo has signed contracts worth more than 100 million Euros with Airbus to provide avionics maintenance for both German and Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon fleets. These contracts will cover all repairs estimated to arise in the next 5 years
An Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft crashed into the sea during an airshow demonstration in south of Rome on Sunday, killing the pilot. Horrifying footage uploaded to social media shows the aircraft completed a loop but then failed to get enough lift as it approached sea level
The Eurofighter Typhoon will form the 'spear point' of the UKs future combat air defence capability alongside the F-35 Lightning, Harriett Baldwin, the UK Minister for Defence Procurement has said. “We see Typhoon as very much strengthening UK defence and the first quality I would highlight is its reliability; it has an engine that goes over 1,000 flying hours without needing unscheduled maintenance,” Harriett Baldwin MP, the UK Minister for Defence Procurement, was quoted as saying by BAE Systems Thursday
Leonardo has inaugurated its airborne systems facility in LAquila, Italy that is also home to Thales Alenia Space (a joint venture between Thales, 67% and Leonardo, 33%) which opened a major site in the city in 2013. LAquila, the capital of Italys Abruzzo region, is one of the birthplaces of Leonardos airborne and space systems division
Italian Air Force's Eurofighter Typhoons will be deployed at Graf Ignatievo Airbase in Bulgaria to patrol the Black Sea region as part of NATO's Southern Air Policing mission. For the Air Defence mission the Typhoon can load two 1,500 litre drop-tanks, four Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAMs), four AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), and an internal Mauser BK-27 27 mm cannon, the company said in a statement Tuesday
