China has completed design and development stage of its home-grown turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine system and has entered the aircraft-engine integration test phase.
An article published by the WeChat account of Chengdu Aircraft Research and Design Institute, a design facility of the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Co, last Thursday said the TBCC engine flight test project is led by the institute's chief architect Wang Haifeng, who also led key national defense projects, such as the development of the J-20 and J-10 fighter jets, Global Times reported Monday.
The TBCC engine combines a turbine and a scramjet engine, which offers an ideal single-engine solution to achieving the shift from low speed to hypersonic speed, Liu Xingzhou, a Chinese ramjet engine expert was quoted by the news daily as saying. The TBCC engine will allow the aircraft to fly at speeds of up to Mach 6, which means five to six times faster than the speed of sound, said Wei Xudong, a Beijing-based military analyst. The TBCC engine, which is bigger and more expensive than traditional ones, is primarily used in hypersonic cruise missiles and unmanned aircraft, including supersized reconnaissance drones and pilotless bombers, since no human could stand long periods of hypersonic flights, Wei said. Wei also stressed that once the TBCC engine technology matures, missiles outfitted with it will be impossible to intercept.
China is considering setting up new overseas military bases to provide logistical support to Chinese units operating overseas, a senior People's Liberation Army (PLA) strategist said Thursday. “It is possible for China to build new overseas support facilities depending on two factors- the new base should help China better fulfil missions given by the United Nations; Second, it depends on the approval of the nation where the new base will be located,”
China Central Television (CCTV) broadcast an image from a distance of what was identified as the “Sky Hawk,” high-altitude, long-range and high-speed drone powered by a turbofan engine, a first for Chinas impressive range of military unmanned vehicles. Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the Sky Hawk conducted a test flight at an undisclosed location in China, the CCTV report said
China has tested its most powerful non-nuclear bomb, claimed to be similar to the US-made Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) which was dropped from a H-6K bomber sometime in December. Called the ‘mother of all bombs taking off from the MOAB acronym, the bomb can obliterate armored fortifications and defensive positions using tanks and armored vehicles, state owned media reported
The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC) has offering its newly developed road-mobile laser defense system called the LW-30 for exports. The LW-30 uses a high-energy laser beam to destroy targets ranging from drones and guided bombs to mortar shells
