Lockheed Martin celebrated the official "light off" of the Aegis Ashore system for Romania on Oct. 24, representing the system's operational readiness.
This system, along with its re-locatable deckhouse, will be deployed to Romania in 2015 as part of the administration's European Phased Adaptive Approach for ballistic missile defense (BMD). The company along with the U.S. Navy and Missile Defense Agency will be conducting full acceptance testing before shipments to Romania in next year.
The ceremony marked the second system "light off" in less than six months for the joint team. The first Aegis Ashore system is preparing for its first live test next year at the Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii.
Aegis Ashore, which uses the newest generation of BMD, known as BMD 5.0, is an evolution of proven sea-based Aegis BMD capabilities and uses innovative adaptations for a land-based environment.
Lockheed Martin successfully intercepted a ballistic missile target using the second generation Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) weapon system and SM-3 Block IB guided missile. By successfully launching, tracking, and engaging the newest medium-range ballistic missile target configuration during this operational test, known as Flight Test - Standard Missile-22 (FTM-22), Aegis BMD continued to demonstrate its capabilities to defend against the world's increasingly sophisticated ballistic missile threats

Lockheed Martin, the US Navy and the Missile Defense Agency successfully completed the first live fire test of Aegis Ashore, where the new land-based system safely launched and controlled a missile against a simulated target. The test demonstrated Aegis Ashore's ability to provide proven missile defense capabilities against a ballistic missile threat
The United States will send Japan additional two Aegis-equipped ballistic-missile defense ships by 2017, making a total of seven ships owned by the region. The US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made the announcement on Monday during a joint press conference with Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera after the two leaders met earlier to discuss a range of alliance issues, including the threat posed by North Korea

Lockheed Martin has introduced an affordable approach that will drive cost savings into all phases of the Aegis weapons systems program, including production, integration and test. The new $574 million contract includes the production of seven destroyers and an option for one Aegis Ashore assembly, which together will contribute to the United States Navy and Missile Defense Agency's layered defense system
